Cayenne peppers are long, skinny peppers with a glossy, cherry-red hue. Officially known as Capsicum annum, these pungent peppers are members of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family, along with their distant cousins, potatoes, eggplants and tomatoes.
Cayenne pepper can be used to add a hint of spice and flavour to any meal, including omelettes, scrambled eggs or avocado on toast. Add to soups, curries, salad dressings & pasta sauces to kick up the spice level.
Cayenne pepper can also be added to drinks such as hot chocolate or immunity boosting hot lemon, turmeric & ginger drinks to add subtle heat and added health benefits.
Cayenne peppers are reasonably hot, but nothing like a Ghost Chilli. A jalapeño pepper packs about 5,000 Scoville Heat Units, while our cayenne pepper powder is more like 60,000 to 90,000 SHUs, so does add a hot kick to the foods or recipes it is used in.
